Romuald Traugutt (1826-1864) was a freedom fighter in the January uprising of 1863.
Tadeusz Kościuszko (1746-1817) was a freedom fighter and warrant-officer in George Washington's army in the American War of Independence.
Jan Henryk Dąbrowski (1755-1818) was a Polish general. He created the Polish legion. A lasting reminder of his legion is Dąbrowski's Mazurka, which later became the national anthem ("Poland has not perished yet").
In Poland, this series of stamps is known as 'Wodzowie'.
